Because of the higher percentage of chromium and nickel, it has much better strength, can work continuously at high temperature, and has good high temperature resistance.
The mechanical properties of 310S are superior compared with 304/304L. It also has improved ductility and toughness due to the addition of molybdenum, nickel and manganese.
The thermal conductivity of 310S is lower than that of 304/304L due to the addition of molybdenum which slows down the rate at which heat is lost from the surface when compared with 304/304L.

The composition of 310S is similar to that of 304L stainless steel coil but with additions of molybdenum, nickel and manganese.
The addition of these elements results in improvements in strength and hardness, as well as resistance to intergranular corrosion (IGC). Due to its high chromium content, it has good resistance to general corrosion and pitting. This means that it is suitable for use in many applications such as chemical plants and marine environments where there are aggressive chemicals present. The alloy also exhibits excellent resistance to chloride stress cracking (SSC).
It is widely used in high-temperature and electric industry, medical devices, construction, chemistry, food industry, agriculture, and ship components.
